CSS Design Can Improve Your Website Traffic & Increase Conversion Rate

Web design has almost become an it’s own art form.  There are multiple software solutions available that contain templates and plugins that can allow anyone to get a website up and running in a matter of hours.  This is perfect for personal sites or club sites that are for use by a small selection of people.  However, bigger, commercial sites often need more polished designs as they push for traffic and conversions.

HTML and CSS are the building blocks of all websites on the Internet.  HTML holds content and defines the structure of the page, whereas CSS controls the style of the page e.g. how it looks, what font it uses etc.

Good CSS practice sees content and style as two separate entities.  So separate in fact, that they reside on different files.

Conversely, bad practice sees them in the same file and the HTML cluttered with bits of code that are only concerning style.  This means the file itself becomes bloated and is bigger than it needs to be – not helpful if you are trying to impress Google.

Good SEO (and web practice) would be having the two separate, and the .html web page as ‘code-free’ as possible.  Allowing Google spiders easy access to your content which it can index and use to calculate the theme of your webpage is a plus, and it keeps the actual size of the file to a minimum.  File size isn’t a major issue for smaller sites, but sites that have pages with lots of information that are large in file size can be slow to load and this bad for both users and Google.

Good use of CSS can improve load times of web pages, help web-page rankings (SEO) by allowing Google easy access to what it wants to see on a webpage – it’s content.  The knock-on effect of this is that you will stand a greater chance of better rankings, which in turn can lead to more visitors and with fast-loading webpages you will stand a better chance of those visitors sticking on your site and seeing what it is your site is promoting.  Witht the right sales message this can lead to more conversions and happy customers.
